A large range of Roman sleeping bags are tested to EN Standards to ensure qualityand performance. During the development process. we send a sample to a European testing facility in order to achieve an accurate temperature rating result. Also utilising Downtek – Water Repellent Down.

What is the EN13537 Standard Test?

EN13537 is a European Norm standard for sleeping bag temperature ratings andprovides an industry standardised temperature range that a typical user can refer to as a guide for the conditions their bag will be most comfortable in.

How is the EN test conducted?

The EN temperature test uses a thermal mannequin. which is a humanoid test-dummywith temperature sensors and an internal heating system (dressed in a clothing layer producing a consistent. minimal thermal value). The mannequin is then placed inside the sleeping bag to be tested and then both are placed inside a sealed climate chamber. on top of a timber plank (with 0 R-value). The mannequin is then heated to simulate body warmth. while also being subjected to various air temperatures inside the climate chamber. Sensors on the mannequin’s skin surface are able to trace and record the surrounding temperature including the insulation/thermal resistance value of the test sleeping bag.

What is DownTek?

Using nano technology and a proprietary application process. Down Decor hascreated a water repellant down filling material that effectively eliminates all of the previous negative attributes associated with down.

What are the benefits of DownTek?

While down has long been recognised as the lightest. most efficient insulator foroutwear and sleeping bags. the major drawback has been down’s susceptibility to moisture. which greatly decreases down’s ability to insulate. And after down gets wet. it takes a long time for the down to dry out and insulate effectively again. With the introduction of DownTek. these negative attributes are a thing of the past. A micro-thin nano polymer is applied to the down. creating a water repellant insulation that actually floats on water. DownTek repels water while maintaining its loft and insulation value. even in the wettest of conditions.
